Calella Accommodation

The vast majority of Calella's holiday accommodation is provided within the many modern high-rise hotels which line the seafront. Most are in the two and three-star middle market bracket and are geared to the needs of international tourists. There are also self-catering apartments and bungalows and several campsites along the national coast road either side of the town.

There are a few four-star hotels in town including the luxurious Amaika, in the centre of the resort just 50 metres from the beach. Facilities here include swimming pools for adults and children, a sauna, solarium, jacuzzi, fitness suite, cocktail bar and a la carte restaurants. Each room has air conditioning, a minibar, terrace, phone and cable TV. Hotel Bernat, 100 metres from the beach, also boasts four star facilities including indoor and outdoor pools, a fitness centre and tennis courts.

The many two and three star hotels in Calella tend to target the package holiday market and are particularly suitable for families with young children. All meals are usually included in the package deal and are buffet-style affairs. Some visitors have complained that the buffet meals in certain hotels tend to be a bit monotonous with little variety. If you're a real "foodie" you may prefer to go for an accommodation-only deal so you can explore the local restaurants and sample some traditional tapas and Catalonian specialties.

Many hotels provide excellent facilities and entertainment programmes for children which is a godsend for harassed parents but not always a winner with singles and childless couples. So check these points with your tour rep before committing yourself to a hotel which is not geared to your specific requirements. Some hotels have adults only bars and sun terraces, for example, for those who like the option of a quiet kid-free zone.

Hotels provide about 14,000 beds in Calella but there are another 2,000 beds available in self-catering accommodation, primarily apartments which are either let on an individual basis or form part of a complex with communal facilities such as a swimming pool, bar, restaurant etc.

The Holiday Centre Aparthotel, for example, provides all the freedom of self-catering accommodation combined with the facilities of a three-star hotel. The complex consists of studio flats and one and two bedroom apartments which can accommodate up to six people. All the apartments have their own bathroom, kitchenette, dining area and private balcony. The Holiday Centre is only 100 metres from the beach and offers its guests indoor and outdoor pools, a restaurant, snack bar, poolside bar and boutique.

For cheaper and more traditionally Spanish accommodation, try one of the many pensions and hostals in town. These are usually small, family-run establishments, many of them in the old part of the town. In the main you can expect get clean and comfortable "no frills" accommodation but with the blossoming of international tourism here, many offer a good range of facilities along the lines of any modern two-star hotel. Hostal Atlantic, for example, has rooms with en-suite baths or showers, satellite TV, a bar and even the chance to connect to the Internet. Catalan, Spanish and French cuisine is served in the restaurant which offers both a la carte and set menus. You'll find the hostal in Calle San Jaume, 50 metres from the town centre and 100 metres from the beach.

There are some excellent campsites along this stretch of coastline, in beautiful seaside settings and equipped with a good range of services and facilities. Camping El Far is on the national N-11 coast road, just 200 metres from the town centre and 100 metres from the beach. The site has a café, restaurant, laundry, supermarket and children's play park. There are also self-catering bungalows to rent here. Camping Bell Sol is another well-equipped site on the national road between Calella and Pineda. This family-run site is in a lovely setting with plenty of trees and just a few metres from the underpass which takes you to the local beach. There's a big swimming pool, bar, restaurant and supermarket with fresh daily produce. Small self-catering flats are also available for two people (with room for one child under-10 on a camp bed).
