Estepona Car Hire

Car hire is not essential in Estepona if you're staying close to the town centre or in one of the self-contained resort hotels or apartment complexes. Local travel agents provide a varied programme of day trips and excursions to enable you to explore the many places of interest within easy reach of the resort.

But if you plan to spend a good part of your holiday exploring the beautiful Andalucian hinterland and the fascinating cities of southern Spain, then a rental car is the best way to do it.

Seville, Cadiz, Cordoba and Jerez are all within easy driving distance. Granada, with its famous Alhambra Palace, is three hours drive east of Estepona at the foothills of the magnificent Sierra Nevada mountain range.

Gibraltar is only 45 minutes along the coast - but prepare to wait longer than that at the border control post due to a deliberate go slow policy by the Spanish authorities in retaliation against Britain's continued dominance of the hotly disputed rock.

You could even take a day trip to Africa if you drive to the southernmost tip of Spain and get on a ferry from Algeciras to Tangier.

There have been instances of "motorway pirates" targeting foreigners in hired cars on the Costa del Sol so keep all your valuables with you when you stop at a service station and never leave the keys in the ignition. The favourite trick is to try and flag you down on the hard shoulder on the basis that something's wrong with your car. Ignore anyone who tries to do this and check your car at the next service area if you think there's a problem.
