Mallorca Car Hire

If you're interested in seeing more of Mallorca than the beaches, bars and night clubs of Magaluf then hiring a car is the best way to do it. There are numerous car hire firms on the island and rental cars here have got to rank among the cheapest in the Mediterranean.

You can hire a car for as little as £12 a day so it's an ideal way to explore the countryside and unspoilt stretches of coastline. Be warned that if you head into the mountainous north western region some of the roads are incredibly steep, winding and narrow. You'll need to take it slowly and be prepared to pull over and stop to allow oncoming vehicles to pass.

If you're visiting the major towns, bear in mind that the blue-lined parking areas are pay and display only and the green zones are for residents.

With a car you'll be able to tour the beautiful coves and beaches of the east coast and explore the rural heartland of Mallorca with its historic villages and the wine-growing region around Benissalem.

Head into the Tramuntana mountains and take in a visit to the beautiful village of Deia where the famous English writer and poet Robert Graves spent most of his working life.

Visit the ancient monastery at Lluc in the north west and drive through the picturesque orange and lemon groves of Soller.

Stop at some of the local villages for some traditional tapas and local Mallorcan fare. Colourful street markets are held in almost every town and village, the most traditional of which is the Wednesday morning market in the medieval town of Sineu in the centre of the island. Here you'll find everything from livestock and live snails for sale to fresh flowers, arts and crafts.

If you're holidaying in high season make sure you book a car in advance to avoid disappointment. You'll be more comfortable with air conditioning if you're travelling in July or August.
